Senior educationist Dr. Arun Nigvekar passes away

Former Vice Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, former Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC), Senior Educationist Dr.  Arun Nigvekar passed away on April 23, 2021.  He was 79 years old.  He was instrumental in raising the quality of higher education in India, in the internationalization of education.

Work of Dr. Nigvekar:

  Dr.  Nigvekar joined Pune University in 1977 as a Professor of Physics.  He worked as the director of the university’s multimedia research center in the 90’s.  He also established the Department of Communication Science at the University.  He later served as the Vice Chancellor of Pune University from 1998 to 2000.  After that
From 2000 to 2005, he was the Vice President and President of the UGC.  An important decision was taken to select hundreds of universities in the country and allow them to use electronic research papers.  He was the founding director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAC).  It set out the criteria and methods for evaluating the quality of higher education in the country.  Colleges and universities across the country are evaluated accordingly.  As the chairman of the committee for the conservation of Lonar lake, Dr.  Nigvekar was elected state.

Dr. Nagarjuna University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Calicut University.  Nigvekar was awarded an honorary doctorate.
