History of the Marathi Rangbhumi Day
Every year 5th November is celebrated as Marathi Rangbhumi Day. Vishnudas Bhave laid the foundation of Marathi drama in 1843 by performing this first play on Sita Swayam. In 1943, all the Marathi great personalities meet together decided to celebrate Marathi Rangbhumi Day. At the place of Sangli from 5th to 7th November. On this occasion, a Natya Sammelan was organized on 5th November. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was the chairman of this meeting.
On the same day, Akhil Maharashtra Natyavidya Mandir Samiti was established for the promotion of Natyavidya. On the site given by Chintamanrao Patwardhan, the cornerstone of the Natya Mandir to be erected in his memory was laid in memory of Vishnudas Bhave.
Vishnudas Bhave Medal of Honor
On Marathi Theater Day, Sangli’s ‘Akhil Maharashtra Natyavidya Mandir Samiti’ honors Vishnudas Bhave by awarding him the ‘Vishnudas Bhave Gauravpadak’. The award consists of a medal of honor, Rs. 11,000 in cash and a memento.
Till now this award has been given to Amol Palekar, Keshavrao Date, G.D. Madgulkar, Chhota Gandharva, Dr. Jabbar Patel, Jayant Savarkar, Josna Bhole, Daji Bhatwadekar, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Durga Khote, Nanasaheb Phatak, Prabhakar Panashikar, Pu.Shri. Madhav Manohar, Mama Pendse, Master Krishnarao, Ratnakar Matkari, Ramdas Kamat, Vasant Kanetkar, Vishram Bedekar, Sharad Talwalkar, Sh. Navare, Hirabai Barodekar, Mohan Joshi etc.
