On the date of 30th September 1932. This day Gandhiji was in the Yerawada Jail in Pune and on a fast. That time Harijan Sevak Sangh was formed.
History of Harijan Sevak Sangh
The second round table conference held in London in 1931. When Gandhiji opposed the division of the frustrated section of the Hindu community into independent constituencies. The team was formed to deal with untouchability and a new ‘weekly paper called Harijan’ was started.
When the fast began on September 20, 1932, it was observed as a day of fasting and prayer.
Role of Rabindranath Tagor
At Santiniketan, the black-clad poet Tagore spoke in large numbers about the importance of fasting and the need to fight the evil of old.
There was a spontaneous uprising, with temples, wells, and public places thrown open to the untouchables. Before Gandhi broke his fast, an alternative electoral system was agreed upon and approved by the British government.
